Research Interests
Research in my laboratory focuses on mass spectrometry as an analytical tool to study comparative mechanisms underlying physiology and pathophysiology at the level of proteins. These studies are complemented by the use of proteomics, which is the study of many proteins at one time and their post-translational modifications. Interests include:
1) comparative proteomics and metaproteomics,
2) biomarkers of human and marine mammal disease,
3) mechanisms of osmoregulation and kidney function,
4) proteomics of algae.
My laboratory is funded by an NIH/NIDDK R15 to oversee the UROCUP program: Undergraduate Research Opportunity to explore the Composition of Urinary casts using Proteomics. UROCUP is a collaboration between CofC, Ochsner Medical Center – Nephrology, NIST, and University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Undergraduates utilize proteomics to discover proteins associated with urinary casts which assist in diagnosing and understanding mechanisms of acute kidney injury.
My laboratory is a lead participant in the NIST COMPARE project, which is a multi-institutional effort to characterize proteome differences between mammals to identify proteins that correlate with unique physiological adaptations.
